Yonit Hagoel- Karnieli, Yedida Levine-Sternberg & Merav Raveh-Malca The article follows a lecture presented by the writers at a conference day dedicated to AAC during war time in Israel. The article describes the activities of the Israeli center for AAC and Omer organization in Ezer Mizion, starting October 2023 as Iron Swords broke out. The activities included an extensive effort in working with injured soldiers in hospitals and rehabilitation centers throughout the country. The professional team prepared specific AAC materials and helped medical teams learn how to operate them, as well as provided immediate technical solutions and AAC devices where needed. Perspectives on AAC: war time Keren Rosen Iron Swords, which began on October 7th, 2023, posed new challenges to the Israeli healthcare system, but also accelerated pre-existing processes aimed at improving quality of care for hospitalized patients. The article focuses on the collaboration between the intensive care units at Sheba Medical Center and Milbat-Sheba clinic, in the field of AAC, and its intensity with the outbreak of the war. The article presents several case studies that illustrate the importance of AAC consultations in the Intensive Care Unit and other acute care departments at Sheba Medical Center. Additionally, it discusses perspectives on AAC needs in emergency situations, such as the need for rapid intervention in the early stages of hospitalization and the significance of training families and the medical staff in this field. Our experience indicates that AAC interventions can improve the quality of life for patients in complex medical conditions and help them and their families cope with communication difficulties during this time.
